Travel Arrangements
We understand that many of our teams are traveling from outside of the Bay Area although some of this information may be useful to local teams as well.
For those of you needing to make flight arrangements, we recommend that you fly in and out of San Francisco Airport (SFO). Oakland (OAK) and San Jose (SJC) are other options, although they might not be as convenient.
The start and end locations are not near one another so we recommend you keep any belongings with you if you need to catch a flight shortly after the end of the game. The starting location will be in the Marin area so that you may plan arriving flights accordingly. We anticipate that you will finish by 6 PM on Sunday and that you will end up no more than an hour away from SFO airport (likely much less, but we're being on the safe side).
If you are looking for a hotel, we recommend you stay in south Marin county, south of San Rafael.
Suggested Items to Bring
- at least one cell phone
- a laptop with wireless capabilities and a CD drive
- GPS unit with navigation software (highly recommended)
- power inverter (required)
- AAA maps for the areas listed in the waiver
- friends to call for help if desired
- code breaking software (cryptogram, anagram, vigenere, etc.)
- colored pencils, markers, highlighters & dry erase markers
- general office supplies (ruler, scissors, tape, paper, pens, etc.)
- swiss army knife
- flashlight
- reference books (world almanac, dictionary, thesaurus, etc.)
- movie encyclopedia & general celebrity/pop culture trivia
- encoding references (examples: ASCII, morse, braille, semaphore, marine signal flags, ASL, phonetic alphabets, hieroglyphics, prime numbers, letter frequency tables, resistor values, periodic table, zodiac signs, chinese zodiac signs, anniversary gifts, flags of the world, US presidents, Declaration of Independence, airport codes, time zones, US area codes, etc.)

Anything submitted in your application becomes the property of XMI and may be used or altered in any way deemed appropriate by XMI. If you wish us to return any part of your application, please let us know.
If you choose to mail your application, please send mail to hr@xxtraonline.com to let them know to expect your application.
Some of you have requested the names of your competitors. While we do not encourage pre-interview needling of any sort, we are posting the names of those who were accepted to our application process for prospective photojournalists who may wish to scope out the competition. In alphabetical order:

In addition, the pre-application "inspiration suggestions" are listed below so as not to be confused with any upcoming "suggestions" for the interview process.
1. Dating Style Quiz -- solution: the first letter of the nth word of the nth question spells: ANSWERASJLO. If you answer all questions like Jennifer Lopez, you get a special message.
2. Staff Bios -- solution: The syllables before and after each period within a paragraph sound like the same letter to spell FRIENDSTER. Upon checking the Friendster profiles of the XXtra staff, you should notice a friend in common: Razzi. Her profile gives you a special message. She's a cool chick--we recommend you make friends with her if you haven't already. ;)
3. Whack-a-mole -- solution: The ad at the bottom of each page is actually fake. Each hole is a braille dot. The pattern of the mole popping up gives you the dots. Letters are separated by long pauses and words are separated by flashing letters, giving you the answer: WE LIKE DARK CHOCOLATE.
